🐾 Samoyed The Samoyed is a friendly, strikingly beautiful spitz breed from Siberia, named after the Samoyede peoples, today known as the Nenets. These nomadic reindeer herders relied on their dogs to herd reindeer, pull sleds, and keep them warm on freezing Arctic nights. Samoyeds took part in several famous polar expeditions before winning admirers around the world. Today, they are loved for their gleaming white coats, gentle nature, and the signature smile that has made them one of the most recognisable breeds. 🐶 Appearance & Personality Coat: Thick, weather-resistant double coat with a soft, dense undercoat and a long, glistening outer coat. Colours are pure white, cream, white and biscuit, or biscuit. Build: Medium-sized, strong, and agile, with a deep chest and graceful, tireless movement. Expression: Bright, sparkling, and animated, often called the Samoyed smile. Face: Wedge-shaped head with dark almond eyes, black lips that curve upward, and thick, erect triangular ears. Tail: Long and profusely plumed, carried over the back or to one side. Temperament: Samoyeds are gentle, friendly, and sociable, greeting strangers as new friends. They are intelligent and playful, with a touch of independence and a strong wish to be part of every family activity. 🎾 Activity & Companionship Samoyeds need plenty of daily exercise, including long walks, runs, and active play. They love cold weather, pulling sleds or carts, hiking, and dog sports such as agility. Their affectionate, people-oriented nature makes them wonderful family dogs that enjoy the company of children. Early, positive, and consistent training works best, as Samoyeds are clever but can be independent thinkers. 💪 Health & Care Exercise: High — daily activity and mental stimulation help prevent boredom, barking, and digging. Coat care: Brushing several times a week, and daily during the heavy seasonal shedding known as blowing coat. Diet: High-quality food in portions matched to activity level, avoiding overfeeding. Health: Typical lifespan is 12–14 years. Common conditions include hip dysplasia, progressive retinal atrophy, hereditary glomerulopathy, and diabetes. Regular veterinary care helps Samoyeds stay healthy and full of energy. 🌍 Fun Facts 😊 The upturned corners of the Samoyed's mouth are often said to keep drool from forming icicles on its face. ❄ Samoyeds accompanied explorers on polar expeditions in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. 🧶 Shed Samoyed fur is so soft and warm that it can be spun into yarn and knitted into clothing. 🦌 The breed's original job was herding reindeer for the nomadic peoples of northern Siberia.
