I designed this because one of my cable stoppers broke, and there aren't any more for several miles. It is functional. I can shift without issues, but the end is snug in the shifter. I tried to get close, but had issues with it sliding out. You do not need supports, but if you want a clean cable hole, you can go for it. Worked perfectly for me either way. I may make changes, but if it works I don't plan on it. Like I said it is snug.
