Custom Volume Measuring Cup - Parametric Dog Food Scoop One scoop. One meal. Exactly the volume you need. 🐾 I designed this parametric measuring cup to make feeding my dog easier. Instead of weighing out dog food every time, I wanted a simple cup sized for exactly one meal. Scoop, pour, done! No matter who is feeding the dog: you, your kid or visiting parent.
The problem? Every dog needs a different portion, and standard measuring cups rarely match it. So I made a fully parametric cup that lets you choose your own volume!
🛠️ How to use
- Determine the amount of food you need for one portion.
- Set the desired cup volume in the model parameters.
- Add an extra capacity percentage to account for how your kibble packs into the cup.
- Generate your customized model and print it.
- Check your first scoop against a kitchen scale and adjust the volume if needed.
🐕 Recommended Extra Capacity (%) Dry food doesn't always pack neatly into a measuring cup. Larger or irregularly shaped pieces can stick out or leave uneven gaps, so adding a little extra room can make scooping easier. Here are some suggested starting points: Dog food typeSuggested extra capacity Small, uniform kibble (3-6 mm)3-5% Medium kibble (6-12 mm)5-10% Large kibble (12-20 mm)10-15% Extra-large or irregularly shaped kibble (20+ mm)15-20%
These are practical starting estimates, not precise measurements. The best setting depends on the kibble shape, how densely it packs, and how you fill the cup. 💡 Tip: If you're unsure, start with 10% extra capacity and adjust based on your results. Example: A target volume of 200 mL with 10% extra capacity produces a cup with a total capacity of 220 mL. Important: Extra capacity increases the cup's actual volume. It does not automatically preserve the original portion size when filled to the rim. If portion accuracy matters, calibrate the cup with your actual kibble using a kitchen scale.
📏 Important note The cup's volume is calculated geometrically. Actual printed capacity may vary slightly depending on printing tolerances. Volume is not the same as weight. Different kibble shapes and densities can change how many grams fit in a cup. For consistent portions, calibrate your printed cup using your actual pet food and a kitchen scale. Extra capacity also increases the amount the cup holds when filled to the rim. 💬 Feedback welcome! If you print one, share your chosen volume and what you're using it for! I'd love to see your makes and hear suggestions for improvements.
