✅ Anubis, the ancient Egyptian god of funerary rites and the care of the dead, is depicted as a jackal or as a human figure with a jackal's head. During the Early Dynastic Period and the Old Kingdom, he held a prominent position as the lord of the dead. His role is reflected in epithets such as "He Who Is Upon His Mountain" (i.e., the necropolis), "Lord of the Sacred Land," "Foremost of the Westerners," and "He Who Is Upon the Place of Embalming." . ✅ He was particularly concerned with the funerary cult and the care of the deceased; consequently, he was regarded as the inventor of embalming—an art he first practiced on the corpse of Osiris. In his later role as a "guide of souls," the Greco-Roman world sometimes identified him with the Greek god Hermes, merging them into the composite deity Hermanubis.
