Flowers love people and we like to show them off for ourselves and other people's pleasure. So we regularly buy such a nice plant with flowers at a garden center. These are usually standard in a small plastic jar and we then put it on the table or on the windowsill in front of the window to cheer us and others up. Sometimes we bought a larger plant, which turned out to barely fit on the windowsill and could easily fall off. Not handy! Moreover, small plants usually grow out of their shelter after some time. They then have to be repotted to a larger size in order to survive and then there is a similar problem. How do we solve that! Sizes of a windowsill are difficult to adjust. If these are (too) narrow, then there is a practical problem that requires a solution. My solution is then "DISHING"! Make an underlay dish, which you can anchor to the windowsill and slide over a rail. The V-shape of the rail ensures that the dish can only slide horizontally. If the plant then (within limits) falls partly outside the boundaries of the windowsill, the dish including the plant can be moved without a direct problem! Three caps can be stuck under the dish for stability, even if the underlying surface is not completely flat. Preferably, a flower pot is open at the bottom. Then the amount of moisture in the soil can be kept well under control. Too much water then runs (visibly) into the saucer and water in the saucer can also be sucked up by the roots of the plant through the potting soil. A nice interaction. In the past, a potsherd was placed on the bottom so that the earth would not wash away with the water, but I have come up with another solution for that. In my simple pots there are adjustable openings in the bottom, so that the water can be absorbed or drained to a greater or lesser extent. You can also close it completely if necessary. Several sizes of the pots and saucers have been designed, but the extras used are the same. So there is something for everyone.
