Sobre este modelo
Flexi-Lock: Ultra-Thin IKEA-Style Cabinet & Drawer Safety Lock
Keep curious toddlers out of drawers and cabinets with this heavily engineered, ultra-compact child safety strap lock! Inspired by IKEA’s functional design, this lock maximizes strength while keeping a low-profile, minimalist footprint.
Unlike bulky off-the-shelf options, this 3D-printed ribbon sits completely flat, prevents leverage forces from peeling off your adhesive tape, and fits into micro-gaps between furniture doors.
🛡️ Engineered Features & Mechanics
Print-in-Place Flexible Latch: Features an integrated leaf-spring tab with an angled hook mechanism that snaps securely into the low-profile receiver.
Adult-Friendly, Child-Proof Release: Easy for adults to unlatch with one thumb press on the textured pad, but tricky for small fingers to operate.
Tough Resistance to Pulling: Holds doors tightly shut without flex gaps when pulled, protecting cabinet contents from curious kids.
Optimized 3-Layer Ribbon: The flat strap is only ~0.6 mm thick. Built with 2 base layers (0.4 mm) and a 3rd layer (0.2 mm) forming a lattice/waffle reinforcing grid for maximum tensile strength.
Stress-Relief Taper: A smooth, tapered transition between the flexible ribbon and the locking head prevents fatigue fractures at the joint.
Zero-Leverage Flat Profile: Lies flush against furniture, directing pull forces parallel to the mounting surface so the double-sided tape stays firmly anchored.
⚠️ PRINT SETTINGS & MATERIAL REQUIREMENTS
Material: PETG ONLY. Do NOT use PLA (too rigid, will snap) or ABS (brittle on thin features). TPU can be used for an ultra-flexible alternative.
Layer Height: 0.2 mm.
Supports: Required (for the receiver cavity).
Dry Filament Required: The 3-layer ribbon relies on strong layer adhesion. Always use dry PETG.
Print Center & Single Object: Print one unit at a time in the center of the build plate to avoid stringing and travel artifacts on thin walls.
Bed Removal Caution: Allow the print bed to fully cool down before removal, or use a scraper with extreme care. Flexing hot PETG ribbon will permanently warp or stretch the strap.
Handling: Avoid forced, sharp 180° folding at the joint connection.
🛠️ EASY SUPPORT REMOVAL GUIDE
The receiver requires internal supports, but the geometry is specifically engineered for hassle-free cleanup:
Engineered Non-Stick Chamfers: The inner sides of the receiver feature angled chamfers that prevent support structures from fusing to the side walls.
Separation Strategy: Start by separating the top and bottom support contact points first using a thin, sharp tool (hobby knife, scalpel, or thin spatula), as these areas adhere the tightest.
Gentle Removal: Gently wiggle and lever the support block out—no heavy force required.
Golden Rule: Be patient and gentle! Applying excessive force or twisting aggressively can crack the thin-walled plastic.
💡 Installation Tips
Clean both surfaces with Isopropyl Alcohol (IPA).
Apply strong acrylic mounting tape (e.g., 3M VHB).
Press firmly for 30 seconds and let cure for 24 hours before heavy testing.
💬 A Note from the Creator
As a designer, I always aim to deeply analyze every project I model. I carefully account for material physics and mechanical geometry to minimize size, weight, and print time as much as possible without sacrificing functionality.
